About the American Red Cross
When America experienced the largest
natural disaster in our history - Hurricane
Katrina in August 2005 - the American Red
Cross was there. In response to this
unprecedented Hurricane Season, the American
Red Cross provided over 3.4 million
overnight stays in our shelters and more
than 26.3 million meals for Americans in the
affected areas. When America needed
volunteers, the American Red Cross provided
more than 211,000 trained workers from 50
states, Puerto Rico, the Virgin Islands, and
the District of Columbia.
Meanwhile, your local Red Cross chapter in
Halifax and Charlotte County, continued to
respond to local disasters, including house
and apartment fires, provided emergency
housing, food for the victims and relief
workers, and vouchers for clothing and
prescriptions. When the need is there, we
help local families get re-established in
another apartment or rental home and provide
mental health counseling.
Being prepared is important now more than
ever. The Halifax-Charlotte County Chapter
of the American Red Cross provides training
in First Aid, CPR/AED, Disaster Response,
Water Safety, Lifeguarding ,and Babysitting.
Since July 2001, your local chapter trained
more than 9,300 individuals in this
community. During the last six years, the
chapter has sponsored 248 blood drives,
collecting over 11,200 units of whole blood
in Halifax and Charlotte County. Do you know
someone in the military? Your local Red
Cross chapter assists soldiers and their
families before, during, and after they are
deployed for active duty. The
Halifax-Charlotte County Chapter has handled
more than 340 military cases since July,
2001. During the same time period, over 480
individuals have been assisted after their
homes were destroyed by fire.
Because of You, your local Red Cross
continues to provide all of these lifesaving
and critical programs and services. We need
your support - our local friends and
neighbors - to provide for the local needs
in our community through financial gifts and
gifts of volunteer time. Our local Red Cross
Chapter is funded solely by generous
individuals and organizations right here in
Halifax and Charlotte County. It costs
approximately $203 per day, $1,423 per week,
or $6,167 per month to operate our local
chapter. We hope we can count on your

About DOVES Inc. Doves,
Inc. began in 1980 by providing services to
victims of domestic violence. In response to
the crisis caused by sexual assault,
additional services were started in 1985. As
the reported incidents of domestic violence
increased, the shelter opened it's doors to
families in crisis in 1988. Doves, Inc. was
built by the compassion of a community and
the commitment of volunteers. Throughout the
years, additions have been made to that
solid foundation and the results are a
growing staff and a shelter with the
capacity to house sixteen.
